Kanamarayathu

Kanamarayathu released in 1984 was written by P. Padmarajan and directed by I.V. Sasi. This is based on a book daddy longlegs by jean Webster. There is some variation from the book. Rahman’s character added to the story from the original. The story is of an orphan girl who has an anonymous benefactor who sends her to college. She communicates with him through her letters. When they meet, he recognizes her from the details in her letter but doesn't reveal himself. To make matters convenient, she is his niece's/sister's classmate. The songs "oru madura kinavin" and "kastoori maan kurunne" were very popular. Shobana still has the innocence in her eyes in this movie. Shobana plays the orphan girl, mammootty the benefactor, Royachan and Rahman, the boy in love with shobana. Seema also appears in a few scenes as a doctor.

The best thing about the movie is the performances of Mammootty and Shobana. Mammootty looked the part effortlessly in his suits; he was interested in the script and he has a big star value at that time among Malaya lees. He has the power to do young roles like Tharadas but he excelled in this role as Roy and Shobana looked quite a cutie in her frocks and skirts. She performs the adamant teenage lover girl's role to perfection. Even now, we can't think of any other actress in Indian cinema to portray this character.

The movie was a big hit at its time and catapulted Mammootty career by giving the 'superstar' tag. Movie ran nearly 125 days in many major centers and those days, will able to see huge rush of family in front of theaters.
