New Delhi

For a short while during mid 80's, Mammooty saw his career in a decline. Many of his films during this period saw him portraying very stereotypical roles as a familyman or a businessman.

Mammootty made a comeback with New Delhi and Thaniyavarthanam, both released in 1987. One of the biggest hit of 1987. New Delhi was a very important movie in his life as an actor. The film was loosely based on the novel, "The Almighty" by Irving Wallace. His portrayal of a victimized journalist, who systematically took revenge on politicians who flattered him, was noticed and well accepted by the masses.

Movie run well in Kerala Box office and Tamil nadu also.In Kerala run more than 150 days. It was the biggest Hit of 1987.Mammootty regaining his stardom again with the help of this faboulus movie. After the success of New Delhi, He become Mega Star From Super Star.

Joshy about mammootty "In the history of Malayalam cinema, no one has come back as hero after he was down and out. All that awaited a fallen hero was character roles. Mammootty himself was ready for that. But it was not to be. Mammootty rewrote history. Let me tell you something about New Delhi. I made the same film with Jeetendra in Hindi, with Krishnam Raju in Telugu and with Ambareesh in Kannada. Only after I saw these actors play GK (Mammootty's character), did I understand what a great actor he is.That was when I realised the greatness of Mammootty the actor.Mammootty is changing with the times. He is growing with the times. That is why he is the king even after 20 years".
